A Picture of the Business of Circuses

In the novel Water for Elephants, we learn about the story of the Benzini Brothers Circus during the 1930’s depression in the U.S. In the story we learn that the circus’s ultimate demise is due to the financial collapse in 1931. During the story, we learn that the purchase of Rosie the elephant severely drained their cash reserves when they paid $2,000 for her with her own boxcar. Ultimately Benzini collapsed from cash flow problems due to lack of ticket sales and high expenses. Which had us wondering how much money did it take to have a traveling circus back then? How does that compare to today’s circuses like Cirque de Soliel and Ringling Bros? Considering all these companies are private, exact revenue numbers are not available. So we’ll do some extrapolation and hope to paint a picture of the business of circuses. Continue reading

Chang and Eng:The Siamese Twins

The Benzini Brothers in Water for Elephants had the lovely Lucinda but in 1860 P. T. Barnum had Chang and Eng Bunker.  Chang and Eng (their names are Siamese for left and right) were born on May 11, 1811.  They were born in Thailand, which was then called Siam and are considered to be the most famous conjoined twins to date.  It is because of them that conjoined twins are called “Siamese Twins”.  A four-inch ligament at the chest that stretched conjoined them.[1] Continue reading

Twentieth Century Fox left everyone scratching their heads last week wondering. “Isn’t it a little too soon?” after announcing they were “rebooting” the 2003 superhero film Daredevil, which starred Ben Affleck.[1] David Slade will be directing the “new direction” film franchise but an actor has yet to be announced. So as an attempt to soothe consumers itchy scalp, we thought we would focus on the most successful re-imagined film franchises.
