Twilight-Breaking Dawn: The Bonds Of Motherly Love: How Twilight Helps Mothers And Daughters Communicate

21 Jan

What resources were at your disposal to have clear communication with your parents when you were growing up?  Teens nowadays have The Twilight Saga.  Cathy Leogrande has written an essay on this topic  let’s take a look.

One of the many conversations that mothers and daughters had with each other concerned sex before marriage.  This conversation starter allowed daughters to open up to their mothers by discussing birth control and pregnancy in high school.

The mothers and daughters interviewed for the essay already had strong relationships but felt that it was easier to bond over Twilight and to see each other’s point of view on different topics.

Given the hype and media saturation of the books and films in what positive ways has Twilight impacted your life?

How interesting! I have to think about this one. I was raised to value education and community service. TBH I rarely had time and was too busy trying to compete with my brothers academically for a serious relationship. Please the last thing I wanted as an adolescent was to be tied down. Hahahaha! But to answer your question? Its sad family’s don’t place more value on education and are relying on the media to raise and teach their children values and self worth. However, if Twilight helped mothers bond with their daughters that’s better than nothing.

    • parisienne January 21, 2013 at 11:58 PM #

      OB,

I do agree. Its better than nothing. However, IMO. They could have chosen something more mature to bond over.

      OB,

      You’re crazy.

Paris this was a big challenge, if you asked for negative reception(s) to “Twilight.” I’m sure I could find them on the web somewhere. Therefore it would be easy to comment in that way also. This will take some work,I will be back soon.

On the positive side, I think what was interesting about the Twilight series, was the effective mixing of horror and romance that I don’t think this was ever convincingly done before. Yes, we knew vampires had a history of hypnotizing women

Despite being a vampire, women actually fell for “Twilight’s” leading man. (Absolutely no offense Robert), but who could have expected this would have happened on this scale?

          I guess you’re right, I apologize.

    • ozzie20 January 22, 2013 at 7:51 PM #

I agree with OB too. It was just my Mum and I growing up and I was busy trying to get A+ on every subject I could rather than boyfriends as well. Because it was just us two, we had (and still do) honest and open discussions about any topic. So something like Twilight (I’m trying to think what the equivalent at the time was and I can’t think of anything, lol!) wasn’t needed.

I too think it’s sad that parents may need something like this to bond over with their children. But it’s not an ideal world so (reluctantly) I have to give Twilight (and any other pop culture idols) some respect in that aspect!

    Paris-

“Given the hype and media saturation of the books and films in what positive ways has Twilight impacted your life?”

Hmm! It introduced me to Robert Pattinson. I really didn’t think Hollywood had any young twenty something male actors worth paying attention to at the time. I didn’t know who he was before Twilight. Never saw any of his previous films. Anyway, I enjoyed him in the first Twilight and WFE wasn’t tooooo bad but all that other stuff and Twilight 2-5 films????? Well let’s just say. All my time wasted??? Cosmopolis more than made up for all that crap. Hahaha!

      Paris,

I forgot to add the great thing that happened in my life from Twilight? I met u, LB, Ozzie and Lurker. That I truly can thank Twilight for.

    • parisienne January 22, 2013 at 12:02 AM #

Twilight introduced me to Robert Pattinson as well although I do remember him from his Cedric Diggory days and knew he looked familiar but couldn’t place him.

Rob sure has come a long way. He still has ways to go though.

Last but not least I am eternally grateful to the Twilight fandom for putting me in the lives of you, LB, Lurker, Ozzie and CR. Even though it is batshit crazy (oh and thanks Nancy for showing the world how to be truly delusional-nice blur of the lines there.)

      • Open Book January 22, 2013 at 7:18 PM #

Yeah! Rob does have a long ways to go but Cosmopolis was good to start with out of the gate and his other projects coming up sound (just as) if not more interesting than Cosmo.

      • ozzie20 January 22, 2013 at 7:57 PM #

Same for me too! I wouldn’t have met everyone here and others if it wasn’t for this book. I wouldn’t be able to learn as much as I do about the media from this site, which I value so much more than Twilight (I’m a nerd, I need to learn how things work, lol).

A lot of people consider the earnings of “Twilight” as it’s most positive feature. I don’t want to be cynical but many studios consider box office earnings the most essential aspect of a feature film experience. Excellent box office can even provide actors with greater longevity as film production/development participants.

Speaking of directors, all having previous experience, many have already produced other films for other studios or projects.

    Director: Katherine Hardwicke
    Since “Twilight”: “Red Riding Hood”
    2013: Plush

    Director: Chris Weitz
Since “Twilight: New Moon”: “A Better Life”

    Director: David Slade
    Since “Twilight: Eclipse”: television
    Breaking Bad
    Awake
    Hannibal
    This American Housewife

    Director: Bill Condon
Since “Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt. 1 & pt.2”:
The Man Who Sold the World

  4. Comic Relief January 22, 2013 at 5:03 PM #

Speaking of the actors many have already worked on other films or for other studios or projects and are planning more in the future. IMDB claims these future films for actors of the series:

    – Kristin Stewart
Since “Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt. 1 & pt.2”:
Snow White and the Huntsman 2

    – Robert Pattinson
Since “Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt. 1 & pt.2”:
    Queen of the Desert
    Mission: Blacklist
    Hold on to Me
    The Rover (2013)
    Maps to the Stars (2013)

    – Taylor Lautner
    Grown Ups 2 (2013)
    Tracers (2013)

    – Peter Facinelli
Since “Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt. 1 & pt.2”:
    Gallows Hill (2013)
    The Absinthe Drinkers(2014)

    Elizabeth Reaser
Since “Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt. 1 & pt.2”:
    Liberal Arts (2012)
    The Good Wife (2012)

I’m finally able to get on! Woo Hoo!

    CR,

I could tell you a bunch of negative things about Twilight.

    Here goes…..

A fan has had her work called and her job threatened because she doesn’t believe in Robsten. From what I know she still has her job.

Another fan’s house burned down and she was told that it was karma for not believing in Robsten.

When people attend premieres they ask to keep their identities anonymous during an interview and a picture of that person shows her with her head under an umbrella because she doesn’t want to be attacked for her non-belief in Robsten.

There is a man is Australia right now (I think he’s a pap) who is being harassed on twitter because of Rob and Robsten.

Lizzy and Victoria can’t have a simple conversation on Twitter about something non-Robert related without a grown woman (she’s 55) telling them to leave their own brother alone and let him live his life.

Clare has also been called a bitch and his sisters famewhores.

Where is there anything negative said about Kristen? The only negative things said about Kristen are the TRUTH. Have you seen the recent pics of Kristen for W magazine?

There are many more and I could be here all night

    • Comic Relief January 22, 2013 at 7:36 PM #

      Paris,
In my search for positive stuff about Twilight I convinced myself that all of the Twilight fandom was really positive; so I planned to drop a link to this article there. So that audience could witness our discussion tonight. Simple enough plan, Huh?

I went to two sites that gave me around 200 blog and site names (probably tons of overlap) there were Twilight, Stephanie Meyers, Rob, Kristen, & Taylor sites. Simple enough plan, Huh?

When it came time to execute, I could not understand how most of the blogs worked? Where were you supposed to post, how could you specify anything? And of course their were more fan and paparazzi photographs than anyone could possibly imagine.

Maybe I did not spend enough time, or maybe I still do not understand that culture enough to know how to speak to or listen to them.

I don’t understand Robsten, and maybe this is a good thing. Yes, now I finally understand your “batshit” comment.

      • parisienne January 22, 2013 at 8:06 PM #

        CR,

Thanks for trying to think of it as positive and wanting to drop a link but in all honesty I don’t think they would pay attention anyway. You don’t want to understand Robsten. I would think that anyone who does wishes they didn’t (including Rob and Kristen themselves) they have both gone through hell (did i just stick up for her?)

In all honesty, what this fandom has shown me is that they have no control over anything in their lives but that’s their own fault its called accepting responsibility and facing facts.

They truly are psychotic. I have never never seen so much vitirol spewed at people for a fantasy. In reality, that’s all it is….a fantasy

      • ozzie20 January 22, 2013 at 8:10 PM #

Welcome to the cult of robsten, CR! I still don’t understand it either. My advice is to run as far and as fast as you can! They can smell independant thoughts and will devour you if you refuse to conform to group thought!

        • Comic Relief January 22, 2013 at 8:48 PM #

I guess I can’t argue with you. That (possibly 50 year old woman) who ran out in the street and was hit by a car and killed last year (possibly waiting for tickets) was really sad but even more so freaky. The blogs nor Summit spent less than a minute eulogizing her. Then It was just business as usual.

Cut throats and psychos make terrible allies.

    • Comic Relief January 22, 2013 at 8:10 PM #

      Paris,

How should fans interpret the Forbes magazine story? How can be she be part of the “highest grossing romantic couple” and have next to no new films planned for the near future?

      • parisienne January 22, 2013 at 8:16 PM #

They should interpret that as numbers being fudged. Same with her being the highest paid actress in HW.

That wouldn’t surprise me. As much as I hate to say it, she has a great PR team that can spin anything!

  6. parisienne January 22, 2013 at 7:12 PM #

    CR,

The thing with making movies is who is going to follow these people once the saga is completely done? ALL of Kristen’s movies outside of Twilight have flopped. She’s not bankable. The only thing she’s got going for her is she positions herself well as we have seen from her photos with Rupert. 😉

Rob and Kristen are being watched right now because they are still in the Twilight bubble. The bubble is ready to burst.

      Paris,

I don’t disagree with you. Seems people keep finding new ways to disregard her. I think she might have a chance without the Rupert debacle. Before that happened, she actually had a few movies in her back pocket. It’s kind of shocking that Robert has so many more movies ready to launch and she (supposedly the star of the series) has nothing. And no I don’t think it is sexism.

She should have a ton of money in her pocket after Breaking Dawn two; maybe she’ll do something constructive with it. I would start by correcting some of what was said in the article below.

stopping the nervous ticks would mean she’d actually have to take classes (they teach you how to do that in acting classes) no casting director is going to notice unless one of her ticks happens while she’s flat on her back.

Although Disneyland is under going extensive refurbishments right now. He might want to try Disney World. It would make it easier to hide as well. 🙂

Oh. Yes! Disney World has much better rides as well. But the lines are longer. What to do? What to do?

While looking up some positive aspects of Twilight. I came across this article. I know that we have discussed how SM’s religion played a part in the Saga but we can always delve a little deeper.

This is really a great article Paris. In the article it states mothers should speak to their daughters about the negative undertones of the series. Unfortunately, some of the obsessed Twi-Moms and adult women also need help understanding the negative undertones of the series IMO.
