Skyfall’s on Oscars?

7 Jan

Last week the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the James Bond movie franchise will be paid tribute to at the 85th Academy Awards for its 50 year history. [1]

James Bond has often been overlooked by the Oscars so this is good news for fans and everyone who has worked on the franchise! Seven of the films have been nominated before (usually in the sound and visual effects categories) but it has only won twice. The first was in 1964 when Goldfinger won for best sound effects and the second was in 1964, when Thunderball won for best visual effects. Five more Bond films went on to be nominated, the last one being in 1981 (For Your Eyes Only).

There may be more good news in store for James Bond in Oscar related news. Skyfall (which has earned over $1 billion worldwide so far) has been nominated for The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures by the Producers Guild of America. [2] The PGA awards are a good indication of which film could win best picture at the Oscars. But the competition is tough. If it doesn’t work out, it still could get nominated in other categories, most likely the usual visual effects and sound (the theme sound wrote and sung by Adele is getting a lot of buzz). Then again it may get none; the Oscars are fickle towards James Bond!

Oscar nomination announcement takes place on the 10th January.

The PGA ceremony takes place on the 26th of January.

The Oscar ceremony takes place on the 24th of February.

I hear Adele is supposed to perform for the Oscars.

Isn’t this year’s Oscars hosted by Seth Mcfarlene? If Adele were to perform I’ll be in heaven, lol!

      • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 7:18 PM #

Yes!Family Guy Seth MacFarlane does host the Oscar’s this year. This should be interesting.

        • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 7:21 PM #

Ozzie I keep thinking how are they going to combine the class of Bond with the bathroom humor of Family Guy?

        • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 7:28 PM #

It’s great you two have so much confidence in Seth. I only know him from animation (“Ted” or “Family Guy”) and the lead time for that is infinitely longer than the kind of ad libbing necessary in a live performance.

Sorry that’s my two cents. Im still hopeful. 😉

          • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 7:30 PM #

Well it’s definitely a big contrast. Sometimes contrast is good.

            • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:05 PM #

I love his animation shows and listening to the commentary he seems pretty quick and on the ball. I’ve only seen a bit of his Saturday Night Live hosting and again he seemed good and handled it well. I don’t think he’s going to be as controversial as Ricky Gervais but as OB said he’s going to be a big contrast compared from to previous hosts.

I think he’s a fan of Bond. He’s done several spoofs of Star Wars which he loves and he’s only done one Bond spoof so I assume he’s a fan of that too. But how that is going to gel together on Oscar night I do not know!

On a side note, I imagine he’ll sing. He has a wonderful voice and loves big old fashion band music and uses a full orchestra on his shows.

              • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 8:10 PM #

Yeah! He is a quick wit. U need that for stand up. I think he appeals to a wide demographic as well. This will definitely help Oscar boost its ratings this year.

            • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:08 PM #

In my search to find Seth singing I found this. I’m not crying…

              • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 8:20 PM #

This is a recipe for tears Ozzie. This song always makes me cry. Dench is wonderful but I could not listen to the entire thing. Not if u want me to continue.

                • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:23 PM #

I didn’t even last 30 seconds of her singing before I started crying! I had to stop it too or I probably would never have stopped crying, lol.

            • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:10 PM #

And Seth if anyone is interested, lol!

Hey! Seth has a little Sinatra vibe going. I like it! Hahaha!

I can tell; I will be watching this year.

                • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:26 PM #

He does! He’s had Frank’s son on his show’s several times too. He seems to be a big fan of old Hollywood so I can see the Oscars going smoothly. Yet with his sense of humour… I’m sure he’s going to ruffle some feathers too. It’s going to be an interesting show this year! 🙂

I really hope Adele performs at the Oscars. I love her song for Skyfall.

I still can’t believe that Sam Mendes is responsible for this film?

    Producer:
    Revolutionary Road
    Road to Perdition

    Director:
    Revolutionary Road
    Road to Perdition
    Jarhead
    American Beauty

    • Comic Relief January 7, 2013 at 3:56 PM #

      …as the director.

CR- U Said: “I still can’t believe that Sam Mendes is responsible for this film?”

Why is that a shock to u?

      • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 7:12 PM #

Sorry, that was a compliment. Actors easily seem to morph from one genre to another. I don’t know of that many directors who are as good with action films as they are as they are with drama.

Before Skyfall my list would have ended here.
        • Quentin Tarantino
        • Steven Spielberg
        • David Fincher

        • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 7:15 PM #

          Hmm! Why these directors?

          • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 7:20 PM #

Cough, cough. They all do good action and dramatic movies.

Ah! Gotcha. : 0) Did u notice my greeting tonight to Ozzie? It was influenced by David Fincher’s “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Hahahaha!

              • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 7:35 PM #

Sorry, went over my head. I really love “Girl with the dragon tattoo.” I’M EMBARASSED HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE SEEN IT.

If it isn’t too much trouble; please explain the relationship between your greeting and the movie.

I didn’t until you pointed it out, lol.

Yeah! Its something they say in Sweden. Given they were filming in Sweden Rooney Mara ended up incorporating it into the film and making it apart of her character.

                    • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 7:52 PM #

Wow, I guess I will need to watch it one more time (just to confirm).

Actually, its mentioned in the commentary by Fincher. Please! I can’t take the credit for being that observant and with it. Hahaha!!

                    • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 8:25 PM #

Thanks, yet I believed you were that observant because I’ve heard you do that sort of thing before.

                    • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:29 PM #

You know, I was just thinking I was going to have to watch it again and this totally gives me an excuse to watch it over and over again! The only thing I can remember from the commentary was that the opening credits were supposed to be like Lisbeth’s nightmares.

    Ozzie,

Great article! I hope this movie receives its due awards. Everyone who worked on the film (cast and crew) deserve the recognition.

    • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 7:21 PM #

Thanks! I’m hoping for Judi Dench and Adele to be nominated. However, Judi could be nominated for her role in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I just think she’s been a very good fit with Bond, a perfect M and now that she’s left the franchise, I want her to be recognised for it!

      • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 7:23 PM #

Oh! ITA Judi Dench does need to be recognized. I love her.

The series is really going to miss her.

This question is for everyone. Out of all the Bond films which one is your favorite and why?

    • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:33 PM #

I don’t think I can pick just one! Definately Daniel Craig’s ones for sure. This may take awhile!

Trivia time! That’s not actually Sean Connery in the gun barrel opening. It’s a man called Bob Simmons (a stunt man and stunt coordinator for all but one Bond film, right up to his death) and he also did it for Dr. No and From Russia With Love. After that the gun scene features the actors playing Bond!

Are u saying this is your favorite Bond film?

        • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 8:05 PM #

It’s not my favorite Bond film, it’s just that I have really enjoyed the franchise since Craig signed on.

          • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 8:05 PM #

Ah! Gotcha. Why do u like D. Craig?

    • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 8:15 PM #

That set of clips is really intense, yet I have to agree the introductions to the franchise are overall really spectacular.

  9. Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 8:06 PM #

He’s a much more visceral Bond, a little more mercenary than cocktail sipper. I don’t hate the dinner jackets I just find the actor easier to suspend my imagination with.

    • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:21 PM #

I know what you mean. He’s my favourite too. I didn’t think that would happen when he was first announced as Bond. I was kind of indifferent to him, then the first film came out and he just was fantastic! Despite that, I still had a little reservation over him being in The Girl With A Dargon Tattoo. The same happened again when I watched that! He’s a great actor.

      • Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 8:28 PM #

Ozzie, we’re drinking the same Cool-aid.

        • Open Book January 8, 2013 at 8:37 PM #

Well D. Craig to me is a thoughtful and subtle detailed actor. I love this quality about him. This is what makes his performances more authentic, realistic and different IMO.

          • ozzie20 January 8, 2013 at 8:40 PM #

Yes! I love those type of actors.

  10. Comic Relief January 8, 2013 at 8:52 PM #

Fun discussion Ozzie. Sorry I have to go. See you all soon.
