LIH regular viewers, you may have wondered why this site is hosted by WordPress. Well, it is not a long story yet you should know so you will know us better. This is a story of high technology, fine blogging features and finding a useful tool to assist with the discussion of films.
It was Lurker, the most programming savvy member of our crew who decided the site would be best served by WordPress.org. Yes, you may have heard about blog hosting sites like Drupal, Blogger, Trendpedia, Moblog or Bzzster! and many others yet WordPress had some contemporary features that were hard for us to ignore. When looking for corresponding sites on a programming level, that we’re as progressive as we wanted to be in our entertainment articles, WordPress was perfect.
“WordPress started in 2003 with a single bit of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing and with fewer users than you can count on your fingers and toes. Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.
Everything you see here, from the documentation to the code itself, was created by and for the community. WordPress is an Open Source project, which means there are hundreds of people all over the world working on it. (More than most commercial platforms.) It also means you are free to use it for anything from your cat’s home page to a Fortune 500 web site without paying anyone a license fee and a number of other important freedoms.”[1]
You might have noticed that WordPress has some similar attributes to one of our biggest video and illustration suppliers Youtube.com; and you would be very observant. As mentioned in a previous editorial about Youtube.com, this resource was also free, began as a vehicle to allow people to share videos, and ultimately extends our ability to reference material on and off the web. An entertainment site might naturally need these features when discussing contemporary films.
From our experience, the WordPress community is an excellent one and has been a constant source of support in this crowded and competitive web market. We could go further to discuss many of the back end WordPress features that provide protection and help us to know you and your content preferences better, but Instead we’ll save that for a future article.
Until then I hope this may have answered many of your questions.
Also, we hope that you have in enjoyed our series on England’s positive impact of popular culture. Were half way through and were having a ball discovering how influential the UK has been on the business of Hollywood and many of its sub ventures.
As always, love you Lurker and hope you have great holiday.
