HOLLYWOOD TAKE 2: The Hobbit Trilogy

This week we’ll be briefly looking at the new president of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Then we’ll move onto the announcement made by Peter Jackson on his film The Hobbit. Finally, we will look at the new Bond trailer and the 5 minutes long Cloud Atlas trailer.

Hawk Koch: The new president of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

On Tuesday, the Board of Governors gathered to decide the new president of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Hawk Koch chosen to take on the role. He has produced many notable movies such as Primal Fear and Source Code [1]. This is his first term as president however he’s not the first Koch to fill this role. His father Howard W. Koch (also a producer) served as president from 1977 to 1979 [2].

The Hobbit will be a Trilogy

Peter Jackson confirmed on Monday that The Hobbit will become a trilogy. The extra material will come from the 25 page appendix that Tolkien added at the end of The Return of the King. Four weeks of additional shooting will take place later this year. The third film will be released in the summer of 2014 [3]. See Peter Jackson’s statement here

New Trailers: Skyfall and Cloud Atlas

This week the trailers for the next Bond film Skyfall and Cloud Atlas dropped.  Skyfall is directed by Sam Mendes and stars Daniel Craig, Judy Dench, Javier Bardem plus many more talented actors. In this film, M’s past comes back to haunt her, Bond’s loyalty is tested and he must stop the threat that MI6 comes under. It will be released on the 9th of November.

Cloud Atlas is directed by Tom Tyker and the Wachowski siblings, Andy and Lana. It too has a star studded cast that includes Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry and Susan Sarandon just to name a few. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same title by David Mitchell and is about how the lives of individuals impact others in the past, present and future. Also released was a brief commentary by the directors to explain the making of the film and why the trailer is so long. It will be released on the 26th of October.

    I’m glad we’re getting a trilogy. I’m think I may be joining Tolken fandom.
