Dark Shadows, starring a superb cast of Depp, Bonham Carter, and Michelle Pfieffer, opened this weekend with $29.7M. It took spot number two because well…we all know who is still holding powerfully at number 1. Let’s see how it did and if it’s worth the money!
Note: We only review films in wide release.
Dark Shadows—PG-13 What’s the Buzz? Barnabas Collins is a rich, powerful playboy of Collinsport, Maine. When he turns down the lovely Angelique Bouchard, she turns him into a vampire. Two centuries later, he rises from the undead to the 1970s to a very dysfunctional Collins family. The Los Angeles Times felt Tim Burton made the movie he wanted to make and not what fans of the original Dark Shadows wanted to see. This version of Dark Shadows, “plays more fang in cheek, so to speak, than the more straight-ahead original. As a result, the film turns out to be an uncertain combination of elements that unsuccessfully tries to be half-scary, half-funny and all strange…”[1] Consumers were confused as well, not knowing exactly where the story was going and finding the story disjointed.
So is it worth the money? Maybe. Depends if you are a Burton/Depp fan.

Thanks LB for the review. I don’t feel compelled to see Dark Shadows. I think I will wait for it on DVD. However, I might be willing to see The Dictator this weekend. Battleship looks a mess. So I will pass on that one as well. What to Expect When Your Expecting? It looks really forced and too gimmicky. Yeah! I’m not surprised it got such a low RT rating.
I ditto your sentiments exactly. Can’t really go too wrong with Baron Cohen. He’s extreme and an acquired taste, but well…I’m a weirdo, so I love him! hahaha!!!!
Battleship? In the words of the great and wise Charlie Brown, “Good grief.”
As for WTEWYE? Huge celebrity ensemble casts ALWAYS make me wary.
You know, I’m gonna take one for the team when SWATH comes out. It’s one of those films I have to see. I just…have to. I may lose my mind, my stomach, hurl tomatoes, but I gotta do it!!! hahaha!!!!
“…hurl tomatoes…”
(snicker, snicker)
I’m beginningto wonder whether I will ever be mature enough to handle what dgoes on in the ‘bells household.
hahaha!!! There is a “no maturity” rule in our household. Except when it comes to paying bills. Then we have to act like we know what we are doing. 🙂
