Over the last decade there’s been a few films to reach cult classic status. We thought we look into the world of science fiction to see the top 5  sci-fi cult classic films in the last decade.

This film came out in 2006 with a production budget of 40 million making about 110 million at the box office. It’s slightly outlandish ending and non-linear narrative structure captivated audiences attention.(1)  Does it fit into the cult classic genre? Yes!

This film did not make back it’s production budget of76 million. It earned 70 million in total. Yet what distinguishes this film as a sci-fiction cult classic is it’s daring apocalyptic story and action.

Costing only 7 million to make and grossing 424,760 this film was slow to win over audiences.

Low turn out at the box office yet stood out with it’s style.  Please take a look.

The 25 million dollar budget was pretty low. This film earned close to 171 million dollars worldwide.  Shot in a documentary style this film really stood out as being clever and a surprise to audiences.

I loved The Prestige! I had to watch the ending several times then look on line for somewhere that explained the ending.

Cloverfield was ok. It would of been better if the camera wasn’t so shaky plus the ending was kind of depressing.

Yes, I loved The Prestige as well!!!! Did not see the ending coming at. all!!!! Very, very good. I wonder if I can stream it tonight…..hmmm….

Didn’t see Cloverfield. Let me go watch the trailer.

I may have to stream or rent Cloverfield now. It looks pretty interesting and realistic.

Ok, now I did see Moon, as a fluke, and I thought it was fantatic. Slow at times, but I love Sam Rockwell and I thought he did a superb job. I would definitely recommend it!

Hey would Weird Science be considered a cult classic, simply because everyone loves it?

    • ozzie20 September 1, 2011 at 7:34 PM #

Yeah, those are two I haven’t seen!

Cloverfield can be gruesome at times.

You really need to see Moon. I love when an actor is so great that they don’t need anyone else in the scene to make the movie wonderful. They carry it all their own. Like Will Smith in I Am Legend. Ok, that’s another good one!

        • ozzie20 September 1, 2011 at 7:47 PM #

Yes, when I viewed the trailer I thought Sam would have to be a very good actor to carry this on his own. It’s definately one I want to watch now.

        Hi paris!

This clip is from the end of “Moon”. Without giving too much away, Sam’s character has been lied to about how much time has gone by while away. He left with an infant and wife at home.

Oh that’s so sad, I will cry when watching it!

So does anyone else have any favourite cult classic Sci-Fi films? I can’t think of any in the last 10 years but I think The Rocky Horror Show strongly fits into the cult classic Sci-Fi films.

Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry I’ve not been up to par on this discussion. Lots going on in the house at the moment. I will try to find more later.
