Comic-Con 2011: Wrap UP!

25 Jul

By Open Book

Yes! San Diego Comic-Con 2011 has come and gone so what are fans going to do now? Well there is always next year’s conference to prepare for! However, until then we have provided a quick re-cap of some of the events and news to see what’s coming to theaters in the future. So without further ado let’s get started.

It lasted four short days  full of cosplay outfits, panel discussions and press conferences about films in pre and post production. What films made the biggest impression on fan’s?  Let’s take a look!

Thursday-July 21st.

Big Hit’s:

  • Comic-Con got off to a great start with a panel discussion from Bill Condon and the cast of Twilight.  Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner highlighted some scenes of the awaited film Breaking Dawn: Part 1. The fans got a sneak peek at some new film footage and got a chance to ask questions.

Big News:

  • It was hinted at by Bill Condon during a press conference that Stephanie Myers may want to continue on the series. He said,

Stephenie already said it’s the end of the Bella/Edward story. But, especially in the second movie, there are so many new characters, I’m not sure, but I suspect she’ll want to revisit them, at some point.” Please click here to see video.

Friday-July 22nd

Big Hit’s:

  • The Amazing Spider-Man got off to a fun start with actor Andrew Garfield who play’s Peter Parker shows up in a rather cheesy costume. But it was his speech that got the most attention some say it was the best conference performance ever.

Please click here to watch video.

Big News:

  • Andrew Garfield is not only Spider-Man but also geek. How cool!!

Saturday-July 23rd.

Big Hit’s:

Frances Ford Coppola’s film Twixt 3-D  proved him to be the ultimate nerd. He shared with fans how he plans to use his I-Pad to enhance their viewing pleasure in his next film. This was considered the nerdiest panel discussion to date at comic-con.

Big News:

Will Twixt be the future of Cinema? Here is excerpt from latinoreview.com

We’re talking intricate details and demonstrations of tech, and frankly, that’s way geekier than a Green Lantern panel.   Especially when your 3D glasses are built into an Edgar Allen Poe mask.

Sunday-July 24th

Big Hit’s

Henry Cavill talks Superman: Man of Steel

Please click here to watch video

Big News:

The Immortal’s panel discussion did little to win over fans which also stars Henry Cavill.

Please click here to see the interview.

So there you have it a quick re-cap of the events at Comic-Con 2011. Yes! We only scratched the surface of what went on but we would like to hear from you. What events, panel or press conferences were you most impressed or disappointed by?

Please join us for a discussion Tuesday 7/26/2011@7pE/12UTC

When I think of innovation in film making technology, I always think of George Lucas, sometimes think of Steven Spielberg or most recently consider James Cameron; but never but never Frances Ford Coppola. I can’t wait to discuss how the Godfather Director pulled this upset.

    • Open Book July 25, 2011 at 7:39 PM #

I know I was shocked about FFC. But 3-D technology is big money and it sounds like studios are not backing away from doing it. Regardless of the fact it appears audiences are tired of the trend. Anyway, lot’s to talk about.

  2. Littlebells July 25, 2011 at 12:29 PM #

Great job, OB! Sometimes I forget there’s more at CC than just….you know…and I fell asleep through that. 🙂 I haven’t had a chance to read the article on FFC, but am very curious after CR’s comment.

Did you hear anything about Snow White and The Huntsman? I saw pictures, but that was it.

  3. Francesa July 25, 2011 at 11:52 PM #

Have just started reading about Comic Con. In regards to Snow White…I don’t know if I could sit through a movie with Kristen Stewart. IMO I do not care for her as an actress. I have seen a couple of movies with her and it is like seeing the same movie. Same facial expressions, same deer in the headlights. I have not seen any of the Twilight movies so do not know how she did in those. I think the books were horribly written, so I cannot believe that the movies could have been much better. I know she is in the upcoming movie OTR and I so loved the book, but with her in it, I just don’t know. She just does not have much range. I normally do not bag on actors, but she seems to receive a lot of high profile roles. And outside of the twilight movies, her movies have not even covered production costs. It makes me wonder, what am I missing?

I am very interested in the FFC comments. Will need to read more about it.

I did see Harry Potter and what a great end to a fabulous series. WOW!

As for Captain America, loved the first half, hated the second half. Once Rogers becomes Captain America I felt as though that was it in regards to character development. I also thought with a 140m budget the action would go above and beyond, wouldn’t you think??

Hopefully will be here Thursday. Work and Play have been very taxing physically as well as emotionally.

Hope everyone is well and had a great weekend!

    • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:04 PM #

      Just a sec…

      • ozzie20 July 26, 2011 at 7:15 PM #

I’m skipping BD’s panel! I’ll catch up with all the others though.

  7. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 7:06 PM #

    Hi everyone

I am still muddling through the comic con panels that are on here. So bear with me

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:08 PM #

      LOL! Take your time!!

  8. Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:07 PM #

    OB!

I loved how Andrew introduced Spiderman! That was clever and adorable.

and please, SM, do not do any more films with vampires…..just no. But if you do, make them go straight to DVD. Sorry, that was harsh, but…..

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:10 PM #

      LOL!!

I really loved Garfield for doing that. He seemed very sincere as well. He did not look like a ham & cheese sandwich. How did u like his cosplay outfit?

      • ozzie20 July 26, 2011 at 7:13 PM #

        I LOVED Andrew’s introduction!

      • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:14 PM #

        his what?

        • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:15 PM #

          His Spider-Man outfit?

          • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:19 PM #

haha! sorry! I loved his costume. Just listening to his speech I can tell he really put himself into this character and took it to heart.

      • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:21 PM #

Andrew is to cute and so humble. He’s absolutely adorable.

  9. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 7:08 PM #

I thought Andrew introducing spiderman was really cool as well. No one would have ever thought any different, since there are so many people in costumes anyway.

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:13 PM #

      ITA!

So what do u think about FFC Twixt 3-D? This is to everyone!

      • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:30 PM #

Ok, I got lost reading that review. Sorry. And once I saw the word “vampire” I mentally checked out. I don’t know much about technology, but I just want to go to a theater and see a movie. Can someone tell me in layman’s terms what is going on? Please???

  10. Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:12 PM #

    Francesa,

You pretty much pegged Kristen. She did not help Twilight, IMO.

      Hey!

  12. Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:17 PM #

Andrew really sold Spiderman for me with that speech. And I love Emma Stone, so right there, two great actors who I think will do a great job!

  13. Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:19 PM #

So has anyone ever been to Comic-Con in SD? If so would u go again?

    • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:20 PM #

I almost went to the very first one for Twilight, but didn’t make it. I would actually like to go just for the experience.

      • ozzie20 July 26, 2011 at 7:27 PM #

I would LOVE to go to comic con.

        • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:45 PM #

        • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:48 PM #

Now THAT is the place to have it! Just stating the obvious but I would go as Wonder Woman. 🙂

          What would you wear, OB?

          • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:55 PM #

I would go as SuperGirl. 🙂

          • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:56 PM #

Oh! Wonder Woman. Hmm! Let me think? The Invisible Woman. LOL!

            • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:07 PM #

              That’s once fancy outfit!!! 🙂

              • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:12 PM #

LOL! It’s either that or Phoenix. I’m a Marvel girl at heart!!

  14. Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:22 PM #

Hi Francesa! I really liked your comments. Yes to same facial expressions. I looked at those articles CR posted and wow a lot of people do NOT like her.

  15. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 7:23 PM #

From what was posted here that I read, sounds like the technology is exciting, but is the public actually ready for that kind of movie going experience? 3-D has been hit and miss with various movies, maybe they should get that right before going onto the next? No doubt this type of viewing will cost more, and when disposable income $’s are at a premium.

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:26 PM #

I honestly cannot do 3-D. I saw Transformers in 3-D and walked out of there with a massive headache. Also one of my relatives has a 3-D t.v. and i got a headache from that. I don’t think film makers take people’s health into consideration. I think 3-D is great but it still needs to be perfected. IMO.

      • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:33 PM #

Oh! Paris I’m soooo sorry! I saw Transformers 2 in IMAX and I literally got sick. I did not see T3 for that reason.

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:29 PM #

      Yes! YES! ITA!

I really think Hollywood 3-D experimenting on audiences needs to stop quite frankly! I’m personally burnt out! Let’s focus on some substantial original stories instead spending a ton of money on some overdone 3-D extravaganza. Don’t get me wrong I like 3-D but in support of a story and not have it be the main event, which is what FFC Twixt-3-D sounds like to me. O.k. my rant is over!!

      • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:31 PM #

OB, as I was reading comments, I noticed a lot of people are fed up with Super heros and remakes. A lot of people want ORIGINAL stories!!!

And I agree with your rant. I posted above.

  16. Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:24 PM #

I’m not excited about The Immortals. It looks too stylized and overdone. Although, I’m interested in seeing what Henry Cavill can do. The panel discussion did not look that great for The Immortals which may have gotten people pumped up to see it. Do u think a panel discussion can help or hurt a film?

    • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:27 PM #

We saw the trailer before CA and I said to my husband, “It’s like 300.” We weren’t impressed either, OB. I think panels can do both. For instance, what I said about Andrew and Emma. Loved them up there and will go see Spidy because of it. Even if I didn’t know who Kristen Stewart was, I wouldn’t go see her films because of her “presence”.

And Francesa! Yes! I never go to the 3D version of a film. And if there isn’t a choice, I just don’t see it.

OB, I’ll go back a few posts to answer your “Twixt’ question.

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:30 PM #

i think a panel discussion can do both. For example SWATH, i’m just using it as an example because its one of the two i’ve seen so far. IMO, the actors didn’t know each other very well and that was extremely apparent. If you have nothing to show but photos actually film something and bring that. Don’t throw something together and use music from another film.

Also I would go see Spiderman from Andrew’s speech alone. I don’t need to see a preview his humbleness won me over.

      • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:39 PM #

ITA! Paris….. I really did not see the point in SWATH doing a panel discussion. From what I saw they were so overly controlling of the audience. It seemed very tense and manipulative. It was not carefree and fun like the Spider-Man panel or others I saw.

        • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 7:42 PM #

I’m surprised they even had one since they haven’t started filming.

        • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:43 PM #

Do you think it was controlled because of Kristen and her behavior or they controlled it because nothing was prepared?

          • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:50 PM #

both! It looked like K was about to cry at times. CT kept trying to talk to her to get her to open up more! She really looked out of her league with the other actors. The brief smiles K had was not frequent and look more out of nerves. IMO!!

            • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:54 PM #

Honestly, if she’s that nervous…..she needs to take some public speaking classes.

              • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:03 PM #

I don’t get it? How long has she been in the industry?

                • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:08 PM #

                  Don’t even try to understand…..

                • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:08 PM #

i agree. in all honesty and i don’t mean to sound off putting to her but its just something i’ve noticed. She’s uneducated and unprepared for her roles. Her lack of education is apparent in the way she speaks. She tries to “wing” things and she doesn’t pull it off. She’s like the kid in class who hopes to god the teacher doesn’t call on them because they didn’t study the night before. She shouldn’t be in the lead until she can make herself more presentable. Her BD panel was a joke.

  17. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 7:28 PM #

I think the panel can do either. I think it depends on how the actors embrace the panel. Sounds like the Immortals was amatuerish.

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:41 PM #

      YES!!They were trying too hard!

  18. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 7:30 PM #

But don’t you think alot of FFC movies have a tendency to overdone? Even looking at his older work.

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 7:43 PM #

ITA! But I’m going to ask u to please elaborate on this for me if u will. What other work of FFC are u referring too?

      • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 7:52 PM #

I just read what was posted about Twixt. Its going to be confusing enough without the 3-D. I’m confused already and i haven’t even seen a clip yet.

        • ozzie20 July 26, 2011 at 7:58 PM #

          Yes, I’m confused too.

          LOL!! ITA…..

I hope I did not put Francesa on the spot. I just think FFC can be really out there. Sometimes it can be cool but other times it can be off putting. IMO!

          • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:04 PM #

I agree. but his family seems somewhat out there anyway.

            • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:05 PM #

              • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:09 PM #

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one confused!!!

  19. Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:07 PM #

So what did u think of the BD panel discussion? Are u excited about the possibility of Twilight continuing on after BD 1 & 2?

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:11 PM #

ummm no. honestly i’m not. I hope it goes straight to DVD and stays there. R has given up. She just no in so many ways. She put her mouth under the faucet. Children do that. I thought Bella had some class guess i was wrong.

      • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:13 PM #

        I just…you say what I’m thinking….and….you’re awesome.

        • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:15 PM #

that’s because great minds think alike. 🙂

      • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:16 PM #

O.k. I was having a little fun in asking this Q. But I’m very impressed by everyone’s restraint in their responses.

        • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:17 PM #

          would you like non restraint?

          I can oblige. 🙂

          • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:23 PM #

            Open Book,

I’ll offer a little more expansion for you. No i’m not happy about it but we have to put up with it for two more years. From the clip that was shown they seem to be following the book but R and K just aren’t in it. It feels like a forced line reading. I don’t see and never have seen two characters in love who would die for each other. I think BC is trying to salvage what he can. Somebody please tell him to get off his “Kristen is so great kick” Its apparent what he’s doing.

          • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:25 PM #

LOL! I guess I should be careful of what I ask for!

            • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:27 PM #

LOL 🙂 but I also think Stephenie needs to stop. She’s bled her stone dry, IMO.

              • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:28 PM #

maybe she could write some short stories but no films.

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:16 PM #

Why is the Twilight Saga at the comic con anyway? They aren’t based off of a comic book.

    • ozzie20 July 26, 2011 at 8:22 PM #

Are u excited about the possibility of Twilight continuing on after BD 1 & 2?

One word. NO! I shall stop there as you know my thoughts on it! 🙂

  20. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 8:11 PM #

OB how about Rumblefish for one a black and white film about the death of a gang

    The Outsiders

    The Conversation

That’s all i can think of off the top of my head.

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:22 PM #

Rumblefish and The Conversation. o.k. this is another conversation for another time. LOL!! Simply because there were so many problems I had with these films we will be here all night. LOL! Please and don’t get me started on The Outsiders.

  21. Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:11 PM #

You all know how I feel, so I won’t say anything else other than it was boring and I don’t like I feel the cast is so separated: as characters and in real life. I miss the feel of unity with all the characters, even the villans, in Twilight. Now it’s just pretty much B & E or R & K, depending on how you view it. Before it was fun, now it’s a bore and a chore. Alright, I’m going to shut up now…..

    • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:12 PM #

this was supposed to go under your BD question OB! Sorry

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:13 PM #

      there there *hug*

  22. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 8:13 PM #

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:29 PM #

Great! Hope your mom is well!

  23. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 8:18 PM #

Maybe I should rent the Twilight series? Does it follow the books? Is the script and acting as bad as the books?

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:26 PM #

no the books were fine. i liked the books. the movies should be banned imo. The first one was ok. the other two were trying to target men and Kristen decided to cut her hair so every other frame she had a different wig on. No consistency in storyline, acting, wardrobe or anything.

    • littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:31 PM #

get your drink of choice, preferably something really strong, and watch it with someone with whom you can have your own running commentary. at least watch the first one.

      • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:31 PM #

        LOL!

  24. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 8:25 PM #

ITA OB…Those are not some the revered FFC’s works. the godfather 1 & 2 are a couple of my favorite movies, then I saw those and almost died. LOL

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:30 PM #

LOL! I know I thought someone slipped me something when I saw that crap!

  25. Francesa July 26, 2011 at 8:25 PM #

    • littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:42 PM #

      • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:47 PM #

Girl i give you credit. I go on all eletronic shutdown when i’m at the nail salon. Also i freak out because i always get the sensation that my nose is full and i have to blow it so i constantly am wiping my nose on my shirt. Don’t ask…I have no idea. TMI i know.

      • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:48 PM #

        GOTCHA!! LOL!!

ITA..but they received big press at the time because of who he was/is. Kind of like the some of the movies today. Whether it is an actor or director. If they have won an oscar or broken box office records they promote the heck out of the name and the movies alot of the time are absolutely horrible. Some things never change I guess

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:44 PM #

See ITA! But I think artist should be given some room to try things out and not play it safe all the time. I mean I hate when actors and directors get stagnate in their work or scared to push the envelope. This is what I like about Daniel Day Lewis. Yes! “Nine” was horrible but he took me by surprise. I like that!

    This is for LB-

I think the superhero and remake Q I will save for CR. He said he would be late to the discussion so I was just waiting on him to answer your Q.

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:39 PM #

      OpenBook,

Have you ever seen Stan Lee’s Superhuman on TLC and if so what do you think of it?

      • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:47 PM #

Paris! I don’t watch much TV.

What’s it about? Although the title pretty much explains it.

        • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:49 PM #

Its about people who have some type of super human strength. One man they profiled could sit in really hot saunas and not sweat for an incredibly long time.

          • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 9:01 PM #

            Oh! Sounds interesting…..

            • comic relief July 26, 2011 at 9:11 PM #

It seems like responses to Comic Con were mixed. I always felt I would feel this way if I went. I had a friend who used to go these events and dress up as characters. He made the costumes from scratch and took the whole thing very seriously. Don’t ask me how I meet all these friends who do these things (go to rocky show midnight performances and dress up, etc.)

I’m not that bold, but from a distance I think that’s cool.

i am really interested to see how KS does with the rest of the SWATH cast. i did not like that picture of her AT ALL.

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:40 PM #

      how do you mean?

Yes she needs some type of body building protein.

  30. Open Book July 26, 2011 at 8:50 PM #

    Everyone!

We have ten more minutes to the discussion tonight. Do u have any Q or comments for me before I go?

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:51 PM #

nope it was a great discussion!

  31. littlebells July 26, 2011 at 8:51 PM #

chemistry off and on screen. will she actually make some effort so as not to be overshadowed by Charlize, Chris, and the dwarves? will the cast give compliments that are non generic? that stuff.

    • comic relief July 26, 2011 at 8:56 PM #

      Referening to SWATH;

I really like empowered women in films, but Kristen in armour and a sword seems like an attempt to sell another semi-butch character. For some reason this kind of character never does anything for me.

I’m trying to be open minded, oddly I keep trying to like her.

      • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:59 PM #

        Its ok CR,

ITA with your statement and I think we all are trying to like her or at least give her the benefit of the doubt but she doesn’t help herself in any respect. IMO

        • comic relief July 26, 2011 at 9:01 PM #

          Paris,

I guess we’re all expressing a similar reaction.

    • Parisienne July 26, 2011 at 8:57 PM #

you type all that with one hand? *standing ovation*

I guess we will have to wait and see but if i had to guess i would agree with the last part of your sentence. IMO

    • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 9:00 PM #

Well I will leave it at that! I’m really not expecting or wishing anything for SWATH. This is really a Frankenstein film. IMO!!

      • comic relief July 26, 2011 at 9:02 PM #

        OB,

How do you define a “Frankenstein” film.

        • Open Book July 26, 2011 at 9:05 PM #

          Sorry CR!

Frankenstein film refers to dead parts sewn together and packaged as something new.

          • comic relief July 26, 2011 at 9:08 PM #

            LOL!!!!!!! “…..dead parts….”

            Thanks for the explaination

            Good night all.

            Great article!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Littlebells July 26, 2011 at 11:38 PM #
