While some consumers played it safe last week, by allowing Rio to take the top spot for a second week in a row. Film critics and consumers battled it out over the new released films Madea’s Big Happy Family, which came in at #2 and Water for Elephants, which came in at #3 at the box office.[1] Consumers wrote a number of reviews questioning film critic’s assessment and motives over one particular film. So let’s take a look at what film caused such an uproar and see if it’s worth your money this weekend.
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family: PG-13- What’s the buzz? Its clear consumers refused to read the fine print before going to see this film. As reviews slowly trickled in by film critics, it was obvious Perry did not expect to win any new fans. Film critics thought the recycled material was way over the top and uglier than usual.[2] Yet, the majority of consumers believed the film was good for a few laughs, while others thought it perpetuated negative stereotypes and thinks Madea should now retire. Is it worth the money? Yes! Only if you are a fan of the series.

Water for Elephants: PG-13– What’s the buzz? Based on Sara Gruen’s Bestselling novel. This film was highly anticipated. Although the majority of film critics reviews were positive, the negative reviews (which made up almost half) consumers had a tough time believing. Many consumers thought some critics were far off in their negative evaluations and absolutely loved the film. So much so they challenged critics expertise and declared them unqualified to review a film. [3] Is it worth the money? A big YES! This is truly a visually stunning film.

- Consumers Say: Metacritic- 7.9 Positive, rottentomatoes: 93%
African Cats: G- What’s the buzz? Although, many agreed it was beautifully filmed. Many film critics believed the narration was too overwhelming and repetitive. Due to the graphic content at times, some felt it was inappropriate for young children. Consumers say the narration is for children and parents agreed some scenes are too graphic for young children and even some adults.[4] Is it worth the money? Yes! Please watch the video below.

Hubby and I took our daughter to see African Cats & there were parts I felt weren’t appropriate for a rated G movie. I know these animals hunt other animals for food, but I didn’t need to see them feed off of gazelles or zebras. It could be shown that they eat that way without seeing the gore.
