Music for the Ages

Music:  It is the driving force behind a film today. Often called melodramas, music can help to create the mood of a particular scene and can also assist in foreshadowing the plot.[1] It can also be used to elevate the mood of the consumer while watching the film. For example, the theme from Superman makes me feel energized while the theme and songs from the Twilight soundtrack make me feel a bit edgy and depressed.

Being able to have music featured on a film also helps boost popularity of a band.  For example, the band Muse has been featured on all three soundtracks within the Twilight saga films.[2] And because of the enormous popularity of the Twilight movies, they’ve now become a household name.

What is your favorite film soundtrack and why?  Do any of the songs on your favorite soundtrack hold any personal meaning for you?

My favorite movie soundtrack is from the movie Singles. There’s not a bad song on that one.

The funny thing is that I loved Muse way before I knew about the Twilight books. I assumed they were already popular. 😉

    • ozzie20 February 21, 2011 at 4:21 PM #

I’m was a fan of Muse before Twilight too but they’re a UK band and therefore big in the UK so of course I knew who they were!:)

I love soundtracks so much. I prefer the actual film score than songs if you know what I mean. Also, I can’t really pick a favourite soundtrack because there are so many I like. None of them have any personal meaning either. To me, they are away to escape things. I put them on and I’m transported to another world almost. It’s all about how they make me feel rather than a significant moment in my life. Hope that makes sense!

I agree with enjoying film scores more. I love soundtracks, but I also really enjoy the instrumental that sometimes you forgot is there and then realize how beautiful it is and how much emotion it has brought to a scene. I don’t have a particular score that I like more than another. Hmmm…I am going to have to think about this.

      • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:05 PM #

        Ozzie,

That does make sense! 🙂 Sometimes I prefer film scores myself just depends on what mood i’m in.

        • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:14 PM #

Oh good! It was difficult for me to describe. I could go and do lengthly post to describe move but I have a headache and I’m feeling a little dizzy!

I’ve been thinking about it and the one I probably listen to the most is The Tudors soundtrack particularly seasons 1, 3 and 4. For movies though there isn’t a clear winner in my affections. They’re all equal.

          • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:18 PM #

I’m just starting to watch the Tudors on the BBC. I was all set to watch yesterday and i fell asleep.

            • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:20 PM #

The Tudors is great! Look out for Henry Cavill- he’s Ozzie and my favorite!

              • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:21 PM #

                He’s the king right?

                • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:27 PM #

Henry Cavill is the actor who plays Charles Brandon. He’s also our new Superman.

                  • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:29 PM #

Just saw his pic. he is yummy. R is going to have some competition…lol

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:55 PM #

                      and he beheaded because why?

                • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:29 PM #

The king is Jonathan Rhys Meyers (second favourite on the show!) Henry plays Charles Brandon, Henry’s best friend.

                  • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:30 PM #

the only thing i know jonathan rhys meyers from is…he played elvis in a movie about his life.

                    • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:33 PM #

JRM also played in one of the Mission Impossible movies 2 i think.
He’s very intense. Great acting in the Tudors.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:37 PM #

I will definitely have to watch now. I did see the promo clip for the show and was laughing to myself thinking “God, he gets around alot.” Then I remember he had Anne Bolyn beheaded. Am I right?

                    • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:42 PM #

Yeah end of Season 2 she looses her head! It was a pretty gripping show. Some things in Season 3 had me cringing, but it was pretty great.

                    • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:42 PM #

Yup. Easy way to remember. Divorced, beheaded, died, Divorced, beheaded, survived!

                    • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:45 PM #

Ozzie did you see the whole Tudors too? I did and am contemplating buying the DVDs of each season. Its that good. I can’t remember if Kim told me she saw the whole thing or not. I think she did.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:46 PM #

LOL Ozzie you are funny. 🙂 I will remember that.

                    • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:53 PM #

I learnt that at school, lol. I have the first three seasons on dvd and we’re at about the half way point of season 4 on the tv. Katherine’s just been beheaded. As soon as season 4 comes out I’ll be buying that too!

    • Littlebells February 21, 2011 at 4:22 PM #

I love all the music from John Hughes films. Especially Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. 🙂

      • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:05 PM #

        Love that movie. 🙂

    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:03 PM #

      4string,

I had never heard of Muse before Twilight and then the sudden take off of “Supermassive Black Hole” seemed to put them in the limelight.

  2. ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:05 PM #

I’m here. Just had a quick panic when I looked at the date on my computer and it said the 23rd. I thought I’d missed it but then realised for me being 5 hours ahead it would be the next day for me. Doh! 🙂

    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:06 PM #

LOL! Hi. I’m glad you could make it. Thanks for coming.

    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:07 PM #

What part of the UK are you in?

      • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:26 PM #

I live in the North East of England. I would narrow it down to the County but I’m wary of it being out in the open lands of the internet! I can log in to the other site and give a more specific location if you want? 🙂

        • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:28 PM #

Its cool. Thanks for answering. 🙂

          • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:30 PM #

            • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:32 PM #

I would switch but my pc isn’t working very well at the moment and keeps knocking me out.

              • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:38 PM #

Ah ha! Another computer like mine! I’m actually waiting for the internet to crash on me and it hasn’t. Must of needed whatever update I install yesterday.

                • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:42 PM #

🙂 I had installing updates. I should have bought an Apple.

                  • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:49 PM #

If you’re not stuck on a lot of windows applications, a Mac is a great way to go. I am loving mine.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:52 PM #

you mean having more than one window open at a time?

                    • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:00 PM #

I moved over to a MAC last summer for work even. Its interesting that I can do so much more at the same time and the MAC doesn’t get hit with the viruses/code problems nor the frequent software updates from Microsoft. Have to say I was a staunch traditionalist, took the plunge with the MACbook Pro and am fairly happy. It’s not really an issue with performance, its an application issue for me. Some things I can’t do on my MAC for work.

    Hi Everyone!

    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:18 PM #

      Hi Lurker! How are you?

      • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:21 PM #

Good, feeling like playing catch up but otherwise ok.
Great article! I love music soundtracks they add so much to films.

        • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:24 PM #

🙂 That’s true, they do. Thanks for the compliment on my article.

  4. Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:38 PM #

So I have a question for everyone.
What’s your thoughts on how the movie separately sells the music score as an album vs the pop/rock songs as a separate album? Sometimes I wonder why they can’t be together since they are part of the same movie.

    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:44 PM #

I didn’t understand why Twilight the first soundtrack sold them as two seperate CD’s. I agree all the music comes from the same film. It’s probably done because today’s kids aren’t interested in film scores and only want the pop/rock music from the film. It was a way for the company to make more money.

      • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:47 PM #

True, I do like the fact that they ask musicians to write original music for movies. They do that for the James Bond themes and Paramore for Twilight and linkin Park for Transformers. Its interesting to see the musicians stretch.

        • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:52 PM #

I do like the song Paramore did for Twilight.

          • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 7:56 PM #

I saw the interview Haley did and she said she wasn’t sure if she would ever do another movie song. That’s a shame she did a great job with Twilight.. I thought anyway.

            • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 7:59 PM #

Me too. Are you talking about the interview she did with Rob? Although I don’t think that was really an interview.

              • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:05 PM #

Yes that one! Its sort of interesting to hear one musician talk to another – their conversations are different than being grilled by a journalist. More intimate to me.

                • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:15 PM #

That’s true. I enjoyed it alot and didn’t know that he used to model women’s rings because his hands are very feminine until he said so. 🙂

                  • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:19 PM #

I think his hands are like that because he’s a piano player. Seems to build lean strong hands playing the piano in others I have known over the years.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:37 PM #

that’s true. i play piano and never thought of that.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:37 PM #

                      Be Good Kim. LOL 😉

                • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:19 PM #

                  I’ll find it for you.

          • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 7:59 PM #

I don’t have any of the Twilight soundtracks so I’ll have to sit this part out but one thing I did notice is that there doesn’t seem to be an overall theme song. You think of Bond, Harry Potter, Mission Impossible etc and you can immediately think of the overall theme song, that seems to be in every movie and links the whole franchise together. But I haven’t noticed one for Twilight. Is there one?

            • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:00 PM #

No. Not IMO there isn’t. The closest i can come to would be Bella’s Lullaby. What do you think Lurker?

              • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:03 PM #

Would agree there isn’t one song that makes me think Twilight for all three movies. Honestly, the only one that screams twilight for me is the Paramore song. But no, not one they carried thru the movies (but I don’t recall much of the music from Eclipse)

                • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:04 PM #

that’s because the music was pretty bad. they only played 30 seconds of each song.

                  • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:07 PM #

OK then, guess that’s why it wasn’t memorable to me. The best music was on the original Twilight album. The New Moon music didn’t appeal to me to purchase the album and I sort of boycotted Eclipse.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:09 PM #

The only two songs i like on new moon are “possiblity” by Lykke Li and Alexandre Desplat’s score for “The Meadow”

                    • kim February 22, 2011 at 8:10 PM #

I did the same thing. I was very disappointed in New Moon that I listened to the Eclipse soundtrack first before buying it and realized that it wasn’t something I would enjoy.

                  • ozzie20 February 22, 2011 at 8:09 PM #

That’s odd. It helps to identify the movies and link them together in my opinion. I’m trying to think of another franchise like that but I can’t really think of any. The only one that maybe a possibility is the Millennium triology. I’ll have to look that one up though as I’m not sure.

                    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:11 PM #

I know that if you listen to the exta tidbits on the Eclipse DVD they play the meadow score alot.

                    • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:15 PM #

Maybe that’s the one then they play. Somethings just don’t stick unless they really stand out for me. Guess this didn’t. Ha

  5. kim February 22, 2011 at 8:06 PM #

I love film scores, listen to them all of the time while reading. Loved Twilights soundtrack, but my all time favorite soundtracks would be Grease, Dirty Dancing, and Ghost.

Great article sorry I probably missed everyone, trying to play catch up with everything.

I haven’t seen all of the Tudors but plan on it. I of course find the historical problems with it, but that is one of my favorite eras of British history.

    • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:07 PM #

      Hi Kim!

      How are you?

Kim! Great to see you on here. I hope all is well!

    • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:17 PM #

We played “name that tune” with movie soundtracks last year during the holidays when my family was all together. It was a lot of fun if you could name it before you got to the melody.

      • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:22 PM #

I’m pretty good and just a few notes. Everyone hates me for it. LOL

        • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:22 PM #

but it has to be something i’ve seen.

        • Lurker February 22, 2011 at 8:25 PM #

That’s too funny. It’s great though that we all call identify the music with the movies that the movie almost wouldn’t be the same without the great score!
Think Jaws, The Godfather, Star Wars.
Pick ’em. Even the TV shows from the 80’s we know the themes!

          • Parisienne February 22, 2011 at 8:28 PM #

I know. I love the Golden Girls theme.
