Tonight the 64th BAFTA awards ceremony takes place. The red carpet will lead the talent into the Royal Opera House, where twenty four shining masks are waiting to go home with the winner of their category. But how are the winners chosen?
6,500 BAFTA members start off with around 250 films submitted in the first round. Each member can vote up to 12 times in each category. The top 15 in each category go through to the second round. For this stage the members get to vote 5 times for each category and the top 5 in each category go on through to the final. In this round the BAFTA members only get to vote in six categories: Best Film, Best Film Not in the English Language, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Only one vote is allowed and the one with the most votes wins the award. The other categories are voted by members with experience in those fields. However, the public votes the Best Rising Star.[1]
So, now we know the process of voting, how would you vote? Our nominees for best movie are: Black Swan, Inception, The King’s Speech, The Social Network and True Grit. All very good films but it is a very tight race. What do you think counts more when it comes to deciding a winner? The box office takings, which represent how well it did with the public, or top critics, who represent a more formal and professional view? Below are figures to see how each movie fairs in the box office takings and overall top critics score.
Movie | UK Profits* | Top Critic’s Score |
Black Swan | £10,648,346 | 77% |
Inception | £35,264,403 | 100% |
The King’s Speech | £30,014,606 | 100% |
The Social Network | £10,306,540 | 100% |
True Grit | Released 11th February | 100% |
*As of 4th February.

As you can see the critic’s choice would be between Inception, The Kings Speech, The Social Network and True Grit! Not much help but if we include the box office numbers, the favourite is Inception. However three of those movies (Black Swan, The King’s Speech and True Grit) are still in cinemas and may even surpass Inception at a later date. So which movie do you think will win and how would you have cast your vote?
Please join us for a discussion on Monday: 2/14/11-7pm EST/12UTC
Thanks for explaining the voting process. If I had to vote for just one film to win i would have to say The king’s speech although Inception would be a close second behind.
You’re welcome! I think The King’s Speech will win but it will be a close call with Inception not far behind it. I’d like The Social Network to win and Inception to win the special effect award.
Great predictions Ozzie!! Very good article!
Ozzie!
How was the BAFTA Awards? Can u explain the highlights. Were there any surprises to the show u were not expecting?
The awards were good. My highlights was Sir Christopher Lee’s Academy Fellowship, Best Film Award, Best Supporting Actress and Harry Potter’s Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema. I probably would of enjoyed Best Actor but unfortunately I missed that one. They were very heartfelt and Cristopher’s speech nearly had me in tears! Helena Bonham Carter’s speech was very funny too.
The only surprises for me was the amount of winners that weren’t there. I felt a bit disappointed over that. I was surprised Jonathon Ross wasn’t more controversial! There was a dig at Ricky Gervais and “Take that Twilight” after the Harry Potter speech but that was it.
I did not see the BAFTA’s this year. However, what clips I’ve seen online were interesting. I’m glad King’s Speech won best picture but no big surprise there. U had already predicted that in your article so I was not shocked.
So what dig did they take on Ricky Gervais?
I wanted to hear the twilight dig.
It wasn’t that bad. Something like how everyone was glad it was him there and not ricky. Jonathon and Ricky are friends, so it wasn’t going to be harsh.
what did they say about twilight?
Jonathon just shouted at the of the end of their speech, while the Harry Potter group walked off, “Take that, Twilight!” That’s all.
LOL! that’s cute though.
That’s funny!! The TW comment!! Now the question is, what are they going to do now that HP is over?
Have J. K. Rowling write an entirely new series. 🙂
There u go! Problem solved!!
Oh!! So it was all in good fun pertaining to the Gervais jab. That’s great!!
I would hate for him to get treated badly for his GG appearance.
I didn’t watch the entire show because I forgot that the awards were on. LOL. I did see Colin Firth win and talk about a colonoscopy. lol and also christopher Lee received the Fellowship award. That’s all i saw. but i’m glad that king’s speech won so many awards. They are well deserved.
Oh! Great u saw the show. I heard they did not have the last years recipient of the Orange rising star award present to the winner this year. That is very uncommon? I’m glad Tom Hardy won, but I thought Andrew Garfield should have won that award. We just have not seen a lot of Garfield yet but he’s a very compelling young actor.
yeah they didn’t. it was ks who won last year.
Yes, it was Tom Ford and Julianne Moore who presented the award. I just found out that the previous winner is on the panel to help decide the next years nominees. She wasn’t on that either.
No i wouldn’t think so. She doesn’t seem the type that would care about it much.
KS was not on the panel? Wow! U would think that’s quite an honor to be asked to be apart of the selection process. Hmm!
I agree.
They were showing a montage of movies released in the last year. There were two clips of Twilight. One was the Edward/Victoria fight scene and the other was the “Doesn’t he ever wear a shirt” scene. Both clips ended before she came on screen.
Also, the current president of the BAFTA’s is Prince William. 🙂
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard rumor that Prince William and Rob are cousins.
I hope I remember correctly but Lizzy is or was dating one of Tony Curtis’ son who went to Eton with the Princes. One brother was in William’s year and the other in Harry’s year. I can’t remember which brother she is with! It could of easily got back to them.
That explains it. 🙂 Thanks. I didn’t really think they were related. Just like he’s supposedly related to Vlad the Impaler.
Is that the same Tony Curtis that’s related to Jamie Lee Curtis or another Tony Curtis entirely?
Sorry, it’s Richard Curtis not Tony Curtis! He’s a director.

great! thanks for the clarification.
Thanks Ozzie for the clarification.
She must have made some people very angry. Way to burn a bridge Kristen.
Interesting insight Ozzie!!
I’m interested in seeing Andrew as Spiderman. Why do you think they are doing remakes of Spiderman and Superman?
Both are very big money making franchises!!
I understand that but how many times can the story be retold?
Until people stop paying for it!!
Hi! I’m here!
Hi Parisienne!!
Let me read and get caught up!!
Hi
Take your time. 🙂
Did you get to watch the entire show? I only caught the last 20 min. I forgot it was on.
No! I did not see the show. I only caught parts of the show today online.
I enjoyed christopher lee. He got emotional. it was very sweet.
I’ll have to see if I can’t find the clip online.
Tim Burton gave him his award. You could tell that Chris wanted to hug Tim and Tim just stood there. Finally after he put two and two together he gave him a hug.
TB is funny!! He sorta lives in his own little world. Poor Chris!!
I noticed. Why do you think Chris Lee and Betty White are being recognized now for their work? They’ve been around a long time.
popularity I imagine!BW has starred in a lot of films as of late. So I’m sure it’s due to that.
that’s true. did you see her at the SAGs when she won? Her reaction was priceless.
Yes! That was great!!!
How are presenters chosen? Are they all previous Bafta winners?
Good question!!
Thanks.
I think they are chosen by the organisers. Only the previous winner of the rising star presents the award to the new winner. I think!
Thanks! I didn’t know that. Who gets to organize the Baftas?
I’m not quite sure but the producer is Malcolm Gerrie.
that makes sense!
I got a good laugh out of colin firth talking about his colonoscopy.
Has the BAFTA’s always included television actors as apart of these awards? If so why?
I’m not sure which actors you’re talking about? Betty White?
Oh! Sorry, British television actors!!
The Television awards were included up till 1998, when they streamlined the show. They take place around June.
Oh! O.k. Thanks!! I knew they did I just did not know if it was televised. They do that for the GG as well. Some categories they deem as not popular they don’t televise.
That I think is just wrong. The people nominated in the not “popular” categories work just as hard as the actors on screen. They should be given the same privilege to have their award telivised.
So true! But it’s about getting the advertising dollars to support them being televised I imagine.
I’m getting my facts confused tonight. Sorry! It’s April/May they take place and they are televised. I’m not sure if the Television Craft Awards are televised though.
That’s o.k. u are doing great! We are bombarding u with a lot of questions!!!No worries!
What’s a Television Craft Award?
Basically, everything behind the scenes.
oh. interesting. 🙂
Money makes the world go round. lol
*around.
world of money is a merry-go-round. U were right before.lol
lol. thanks.
Ozzie!
Did u learn a lot from researching this topic? Did it confirmsome things what u already knew?
Sorry!! That last question came out convulted. I meant to say, Did it confirm some things u already knew about the BAFTA’s?
Well, it was interesting to delve more into it. To be honest, I usually watch it but don’t take much notice. It was nice this year to watch it fully and know how things work. Looking into Box Office figures to see if they correlatewas interesting too. I think The King’s Speech would of taken it just because it’s British and about a defining moment in history. I’m interested in next years to see if there’s any difference.
I agree. I’m watching everything I can about the monarchy now.
Well u did a great job in researching and describing the intricacies of the voting process clearly. Also, the added information about the organizers and the actual BAFTA award show was a nice added bonus as well. Very nicely done!!
Thank you!
So we have about fifteen more minutes to the end of tonight’s discussion. Laura do u have any more question for Ozzie?
no. but it was fun! Thanks Ozzie!
Thanks for taking part in my first article/discussion. It means alot and is very much appreciated! 🙂
Ozzie, Great JOB! Sorry I missed the discussion, but looks like it was fun for you!
I’m going to go for the night. It was a great fun talking to the both of you.
U have a great night Parisienne!!
I’m going to head out as well Ozzie!!Thank u!
Goodnight Everyone!!
Bye guys and thanks again for joining me!
Sorry I missed the discussion. Great job everyone.
