2011 Golden Globe Awards: Preview

RED CARPET PREDICTIONS

By: Open Book

The most highly anticipated part of all award shows is the red carpet events. Although, The Golden Globe Awards are a little-more laid back than the Oscars, they should not be taken lightly. For fashion designers awards shows like the Golden Globes and Oscars are big business and a way for them to advertise their products on the backs of celebrities. Many begin the task by sending a sea of correspondence to those nominated hoping for a bite. Some female celebrity’s are off the market like Natalie Portman (nominated this year for Best Actress in Black Swan) due her beauty contract with Dior. However, there are still those new to the arena like Jennifer Lawrence age 20, nominated for her performance in Winter Bones, has hired Elizabeth Stewart the stylist for Cate Blanchett to get her ready for these events.[1] It will be exciting to see those A-List celebrities like Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman who’ve repeatedly looked amazing on the Red Carpet make their return. Of the film actresses nominated this year. Who are you most excited to see on the Red Carpet?

NOMINATIONS: BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE

By: Parisienne

The actors listed for the 2011 Golden Globes is extremely impressive.  Johnny Depp is nominated twice for his roles in The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland.  The other actors nominated are Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network, Colin Firth for The Kings Speech, James Franco for 127 Hours, Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine, Mark Wahlberg for The Fighter, Paul Giamatti Barney’s Version, Jake Gyllenhaal for Love and Other Drugs and Kevin Spacey for Casino Jack.

Who will win?  No one knows.  However, if I were to make a prediction, I would say Colin Firth for his role in The Kings Speech.

GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS NOMINATIONS FOR: BEST MOTION PICTURE-DRAMA

By: Kim

It seems like a very tough race.  There is Black Swan ($62 million domestic as of 1/10/11[2]): The Fighter ($58 million domestic as of 1/10/11[3]): The King’s Speech ($33 million domestic as of 1/10/11[4]): I have yet to see this film and have a real desire to see it due my adoration for period dramas. The Social Network ($94 million domestic as of 1/10/11[5]): Inception ($292 million domestic as of 1/11/11[1]):  I have seen this film and it was incredible!!! So going by the box office numbers it would seem Inception has it’s competition beat but The Golden Globe Awards are not based on box office numbers instead they are decided by the (HFPA) The Hollywood Foreign Press Association who select directors, writers, actors and journalist as jurors who then review over 300 films as members.[6]

The Golden Globe Awards will air this Sunday January 16th, 2011 at 8PM EST.

Hey Robert De Niro is being given the Cecil B DeMille Award too! I’m watching!

    • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 6:46 PM #

      This is really great!

I’m really looking forward to the Best Picture category. I saw Black Swan and Inception and it’s really a toss up for me. I mean I’m a big fan of Nolan’s but Black Swan was so heart wrenching. Natalie Portman was really great as well.

Have u seen any of the films up for Best Picture?

      • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:00 PM #

I’ve seen Inception. However, Black Swan and the Kings Speech is on my to do list.

        • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:06 PM #

Yes! I want to see Kings Speech as well.

I was surprised Leo was not nominated in the best performance category?

          • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:12 PM #

I’m not surprised Leo wasn’t in that list. They always seem to choose characters who go thru some extraordinary circumstances.

            • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:15 PM #

Yeah!! I think his performances in Shutter Island and Inception were so similar as well. But still, the picture is up for Best Picture how he did not get nominated is crazy.

I don’t know why but I’m really looking forward to the GG this year. Last year I did not watch it. I think the films up this year are probably the reason I’m more interested. I really like the fact there are more 20 somethings nominated this year as well.

I did forget to mention I saw Social Network and JE and Andrew Garfield I was impressed by both performances. Actually, Justin Timberlake was shockingly good as well.

    • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:01 PM #

I watched last year but as always I always never seem to see the best picture before the awards shows.

      • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:10 PM #

LOL! I know what u mean.

What do u think about young Hollywood? They are turning out to be interesting to watch?

        • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:13 PM #

Yes I think so, given some of the characters and screenplays we are seeing. It still think it’s about drawing an interesting story and getting the actor to portray that onscreen. Make us care about them and the story.

          • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:17 PM #

Are u familiar with Jennifer Lawrence work? She’s quite an impressive actress.

            • Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:21 PM #

I just saw Winter’s Bone recently. Very interesting and eye opening movie. She did a great job. I haven’t seen her before this movie.

              • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:23 PM #

She’s going to be in X-Men First Class.

            • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:24 PM #

I just looked her up. Apparently I’m not. I haven’t seen Winters Bone though.

              • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:26 PM #

I agree with u though it boils down to having a great story.

  3. Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:16 PM #

Well, I can’t remember if I watched last year GGs or Oscars, that says a lot to me.

For best picture, I have only seen Inception and really enjoyed it. My youngest son saw The Social Network and he said it was really good, I was actually surprised he went to see this movie with his friends. Personally, I have really no interest in seeing it, don’t know why. I really want to see King’s Speech and that was even before I heard how good it was suppose to be, I like the subject matter. Black Swan, I go back and forth about seeing, I’ll probably wait for it to come available for dvd or online streaming.

    • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:22 PM #

I can’t remember but did u see Shutter Island? What did u think of Leo’s performances if u had to compare the two?

      • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:26 PM #

I thought his performance in Shutter Island was better than Inception. But the character was different.

        • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:32 PM #

I agree with u! I just think he canceled the two performances out making it difficult to choose. But ultimately his performance in Shutter Island was much better.

What do u think about the women nominated this year for Best Actress in Motion Picture Drama? Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry are up this year. Are u interested in seeing their films?

          • Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:35 PM #

I haven’t heard or seen either movie, so I can’t really give an opinion yet.

          • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:37 PM #

To be honest, there are 2 I want to see.
Black Swan and Blue Valentine. Maybe Winters Bone is in that list. But none of the others really appealed to me.

            • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:44 PM #

Did any of u see Johnny D. Films this year? Alice in Wonderland? If so what did u think of his performance and the film?

              • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 7:47 PM #

I saw Alice. It was a pretty good movie visually incredible. I thought Johnny did his usual schtick. While good it wasn’t a huge change from his usual performances with Pirates.

              • Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:49 PM #

No I didn’t see Alice, didn’t want too. My eldest son said it was awful. Plus, The Tourist didn’t look good to me either.

                • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:57 PM #

LOL!!! Painful was right. I saw the film and I agree visually it was impressive but it was a CGI overdose. Lacking focus and relying on CGI, cliche performances and dialogue. It was a mess!!

      • Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:28 PM #

Yes I saw Shutter Island, my husband figured it out 1/2 way through, which drives me nuts. I don’t know I think both characters were kind of close. So maybe that is why Leo didn’t get a nom. Do you think that since Shutter Island was so long ago that is why its forgotten about. I always notice that most of the pictures that get a nom in someway are usually released closer to award times, which is kind of sad for those really good movies that come out earlier in the year.

        • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:39 PM #

Yes!! Timing is a major factor. I agree it is a shame how some films get overlooked. The roster for film released dates are decided way ahead of time based on consumer interest and buying trends etc…. I mean at the end of the day money is what they base a release date on not award show season.

          • Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:45 PM #

I can understand that the bottom line is the box office numbers, but it still sad that some really good movies don’t get any praise, that the awards do hand out.

  4. Open Book January 12, 2011 at 7:50 PM #

    Kim,

I was thinking the reason your son went to go see Social Network because of Jesse Eisenberg. He was in Adventure Land with K. He was really good in that film and K was not bad. JE has starred in a lot of teen indie films so it’s nice to see him get a break out role like Social Network. It seems the role was tailored made for him.

    • Kim January 12, 2011 at 7:57 PM #

My youngest is the one that saw Social Network with his friends, I don’t think it was because of Jesse Eisenberg, because he has never seen Adventure Land. I think it was more that the boys were interested in the topic of Facebook, but I could be wrong.

Its funny he went to see Tron this past weekend, while his friends went to see True Grit, my son didn’t want to see True Grit because he wasn’t interested in the movie. So, its just interesting to see how both my boys are very different tastes in movies.

      • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:04 PM #

Oh! I see. Actually that’s what drew me into seeing it as well the interest in Facebook and the reviews were good.

      • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:06 PM #

What did your son think of Tron?

        • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:15 PM #

We like Tron in 3D. Story line was interesting but the visuals overtook the story by far.

          • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:36 PM #

I think I will wait to see this on DVD. That should be next week!!! I think the BO for this film is really bad.

        • Kim January 12, 2011 at 8:34 PM #

          He liked it.

  5. Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:00 PM #

What about the Red Carpet? Who are u looking forward to seeing?

    • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:05 PM #

All the actresses, nominated, I want to see their gowns. The guys, of course we want to see the tuxedos. I wonder if Colin Firth is going to wear a Tom Ford suit like he did last year.

      • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:09 PM #

I’m interested to see Dior’s maternity evening gown for Natalie Portman. I was not very impressed with her dress at the PCA.

        • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:13 PM #

She looked really uneasy. I bet she’s still feeling sick. But yeah evening gowns and maternity will be interesting.

          • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:21 PM #

Yeah, that may have been it. I guess the last thing u would be concerned with is how u look in that situation.

      • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:11 PM #

I really like Ton Ford’s suits they are so well tailored.

        • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:12 PM #

Ford’s own tux at the oscars was impeccably tailored.

          • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:18 PM #

Oh! Don’t get me started. He was my favorite last year at the Oscars of course!!! Hands down, no contest my favorite….:0)

Oh! Did I mention he was my favorite….LOL!!

I hope the men nominated and presenting this year don’t disappoint!!!

            • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:20 PM #

I agree- I was sharing the shot of him on the red carpet. See – this is how you wear a tux!!!

I bet it looked better in person too!

Yeah, Tom Ford!! Wasn’t he with Gucci before?

              • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:23 PM #

Yes! Gucci and YSL… Creative Director.

I must say I’m really looking forward to seeing Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman. They always are spot on with fashion forward colors on the red carpet.

    • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:38 PM #

I saw a thing that coral color is hot this year.
      Maybe we’ll see some brights!

      • Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:43 PM #

Yes! That color is really big. Even though coral is one of my favorite colors I hope we don’t see a tone of it at the awards. I think only a few skin tones can really pull off this color.

        • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:48 PM #

Do you recall that Chartreuse color Nicole wore that one oscar event! I still remember that dress it was so stunning!

  7. Open Book January 12, 2011 at 8:48 PM #

Well this has been fun! I cant wait to hear what u have to say about the show. I’m going to sign off now. Take Care!

    • Lurker January 12, 2011 at 8:48 PM #

      Night!
