The People’s Choice Awards

6 Jan

By: Open Book

Last night CBS was the first major network to kick off the award show season for 2011 with the People’s Choice Awards (PCA’s). Next up will be NBC with the Golden Globe Awards which airs Sunday, January 16th 2011 and ABC will conclude with The 83rd Academy Awards which airs Sunday, February 27th 2011. Over the past two years, ratings for awards shows have increasingly seen a decline in viewership. This years viewership for the PCA’s were even lower than 2010. Will the Golden Globes and The Academy Awards have a better shot? What do you think award shows can do to boost their ratings in the future?

They can stop giving awards to people who don’t deserve them. Perhaps that would bring back a little credibility to them. I feel that they are losing credibility. IMO

Please read this to get warmed up before our discussion on the PCA’s tonight. Below are some comments about the PCA’s Winners from The Examiner.

    Movie Category Winners:

Comedy Star: Adam Sandler (Really? Have they not heard of Zach Galifianakis?)
    Comedy Film: Grown Ups (Sigh)
    Action Movie: Iron Man 2
    Action Star: Jackie Chan
Movie Actor: Johnny Depp (Hmm, he is pretty awesome. But, 2010 was Leonardo DiCaprio’s year. Depp didn’t do so good, especially with The Tourist.)
Drama Movie: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Seriously? I love Twilight but it’s not the best drama ever.)
Family Movie: Toy Story 3 (Yes! I agree, for once.)
Onscreen Team: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner
Movie Star Under 25: Zac Efron
Horror Movie: A nightmare on Elm Street (I know horror movies were not good at all last year, but this movie?)
    Movie Actress: Kristen Stewart (What?!….)
Favorite Movie: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (This is so true, if Twilight was the only movie you watched that year.)

This is just a sampling. For more info got to: http://www.examiner.com/movie-reviews-in-dallas/2011-people-s-choice-awards-winners

    Teenagers these days…..LOL

  4. Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:05 PM #

    Hi!

  5. Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:06 PM #

I don’t know – I think is some ways the internet gossip sites contribute to the lack of award show viewers. In that I mean, there isn’t any reason to give up 2 hrs at night when you can catch up the next day.

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:09 PM #

That’s true. I wasn’t going to watch the PCA’s but ended up turning them on 1/2 the way through. Taylor Swift was getting an award and I watched from there. Also I think they have become kind of jokey.

      • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:11 PM #

Well for me, I like watching (always have) to see the dresses on the women. It seems lately they cut the red carpet short and you never see all the people on camera. You have to got to the web to get pictures of all the attendees and what they wore.

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:14 PM #

I like that too. but some of the hosts I can’t stomach for more than 5 secs.

    • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:09 PM #

So are u saying people are more interested in the results not so much the live events?

      • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:12 PM #

yes. I think people are more interested in the awards. The shows are to long.

      • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:14 PM #

Well they tend to drag on and it’s a huge time slice to sit thru the whole thing. I think they’ve steered toward more PR which isn’t what people watch for. I watch for the gowns and tuxedos. Heck besides the opening hosts comedy act, they could fast forward to the other entertainment.

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:15 PM #

that’s true. I liked it when hugh jackman hosted and he brought anne hathaway up on stage one year.

        • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:19 PM #

Do u take the award shows less seriously when people are to obvious with promoting themselves?

          • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:26 PM #

Well I never take any of them to seriously but its a real turn off to see someone overtly promote themself. Its like they’re screaming “look at me!” Then they act retarded and i flip the channel. I understand work promotion but isn’t that what press junkets and all the media for films are for? The promotion of one’s work?

          • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:27 PM #

No I think what is the turn off is how the award recipients are calculated and the voting mechanism.
Fan voted awards are different than fan votes shows.

            • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:30 PM #

What do u mean? Can u clarify the difference between “fan voted awards are different than fan votes shows.”

  6. Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:08 PM #

Do u think award shows should have a voting system similar to American Idols?

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:09 PM #

No then you have fan base extremes posting votes too overwhelm the system. Unless you have some way to it be one person 1 vote.

      • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:12 PM #

Do u believe votes represent the viewers or do u believe these award shows are fixed?

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:13 PM #

honestly, I think they are fixed.

          • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:14 PM #

            I think they are fixed.

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:10 PM #

I think the voting is ok. I voted for the PCA’s for R but other then that I thought the rest of it was crap.

      • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:14 PM #

Are u going to watch the Golden Globes or the Oscars. Which one do u prefer to watch?

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:17 PM #

I’ll watch both. but i tend to channel flip instead of watching the entire show. I wish they would just pass out the awards and get on with life. Sometimes all the acts are to much and i lose interest.

          • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:21 PM #

Oh! This is a hilarious response!!! LOL!! “I wish they would just pass out the awards and get on with life.”

            • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:22 PM #

              LOL. 🙂

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:17 PM #

The Oscars are almost a given for me. Golden Globes I tend to watch if there is someone I think might win. I think the draw for the Globes is they bring in the TV celebrities. So the list of who will be there is more interesting. I would think the Globe would get a bigger ratings hit.

          • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:23 PM #

Why are u looking forward to the Golden Globes is it because of RP or Twilight cast will present or both?

            • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:29 PM #

No actually I watch the Globes as a precusor to Oscar night. I am actually looking to see best actor/actress and movie. And secondary is the best TV shows.

              • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:36 PM #

I tune in for the film category to get an idea of what’s in store for the Oscar’s.

            • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:29 PM #

It has nothing to do with RP or Twilight at all. My dad and I have contests with each other. To “predict” who is going to win. If he wins he then holds it over me. “I’m wiser than you because I predicted the GG and the Oscar winners.” LOL So its fun.

              • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:32 PM #

                That sounds like fun!!!

                • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:33 PM #

It is. We started doing it when I was little and just never stopped.

      • Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:47 PM #

See I voted for Rob too, but I feel one vote from me. I feel its dishonest to keep voting over and over. Just me though.

  7. Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:11 PM #

When I voted for R I could keep clicking the mouse button. It never stopped me from voting more than once.

  8. Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:16 PM #

There’s been a lot of people saying the TCA and the PCA’s are all PR. Do u think that is a turn off to viewers?

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:17 PM #

I think most of the viewers are teens. so i don’t think they know the difference.

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:18 PM #

The viewers are mainly teens. Why would they be turned off? I think the audience drop out is the adults. They are about PR because the interviewers on the carpet and the hosts question the stars about what’s new – they feed them about PR. So it’s not an ‘interview’

      • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:20 PM #

That’s true. I stopped watching “carpet” stuff. Now i just want to see who wins and that’s it.

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:22 PM #

The carpet lately on all these shows seems ‘optional’.
Even the globes last year – due to the rain, it was almost ridiculous to watch the carpet. I thought the idea was to see everyone in their dresses. Now I can’t see them without going thru the internet anyway.

  9. Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:26 PM #

Do u think people watched the PCA to see Robsten?

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:31 PM #

Of course. They wanted to see “The Love”

      • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:34 PM #

Robsten did not boost the ratings for CBS. Why do u think that is?

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:36 PM #

because people are sick of being lied to and if all a network is going to do is rely on two people that obviously do not get along then they need some help. Also they need to tell their host not to act like he/she is high.

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:37 PM #

Well they didn’t give them much airtime. They weren’t on the carpet and they didn’t put any cameras on them until the end of the show. So holding off showing them didn’t help – in my opinion.

          • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:53 PM #

No it didn’t. Honestly, I think that whoever filmed it waited until the last possible second to turn the cameras on them.

        • Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:49 PM #

Personally I would have watch if they were on or not. It was just an added bonus that Rob was there. I could have been much happier if Summit would have just sent him and Taylor or just Taylor and KS.

          • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:51 PM #

Yeah but do you think people just want to see K and T?

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:55 PM #

Plus they didn’t boost ratings because of the way they treated each other. Taylor helped Kristen onto the stage. If Rob had helped her on to the stage when she accepted her award. The ratings would have been through the roof.

          • Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:57 PM #

I don’t think so I don’t think him helping her actually effected the ratings. I just think people get bored with the shows. Especially when you can go online and read who won and what everyone wore.

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:32 PM #

I think CBS thought so – they didn’t miss 5 min segment without mentioning it. So maybe.

      • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:34 PM #

        really? I didn’t see any carpet/interview stuff.

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:36 PM #

Oh it was incredible. I think the carpet hosts where fully expecting the TW trio to walk the carpet and they didn’t. Even until the last 10 minutes before the show started. So it looked like they were not informed.

          • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:50 PM #

See I would have hated to have been a host. At least hosts should be informed of who/who isn’t going to be on the carpet. That way they don’t stand their expect R/K/T or whoever to show up.

      • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:39 PM #

Some celebrities prefer to skip the red carpet in favor of doing post red carpet interviews. As a viewer do u prefer to see pre or post interviews?

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:41 PM #

I think the idea (might be old) is that we see the stars in their gowns and the guys dressed – it’s a fashion walk. That has become interview central instead of ‘who are you wearing’. UGH. Save the interviews for post. You would get more people watching if we saw the fashion event that it REALLY is.

          • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:44 PM #

So u are saying do a quick cat walk, wave to fans, then do interviews after.

            • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:44 PM #

              Yes!

            • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:45 PM #

yep. I hate it when host are trying to interview a celeb and you can tell they didn’t think about their question before they asked it.

            • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:46 PM #

honestly i just wanna who wore what.

              • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:50 PM #

They need like to have their people give a list of who they wore etc, and then let someone else like the carpet fashion police tell us what we are seeing. Sort of like a fashion show.

                • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:54 PM #

                  I agree!

                • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 8:02 PM #

Oh! This a great idea. The only problem though, so often actors may change who they are wearing at the last minute sometime even in the car on the way to the event. LOL!!

                  • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:07 PM #

Well someone should figure out those logistics. I don’t know. Its an idea.
                    Email works!

        • Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:50 PM #

pre interviews, sometimes those post interviews are just a repeat of the speech given on stage.

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:59 PM #

Have they looked into the online streaming reach statistics lately? There’s been a few of those that I have participated in. Maybe they need to look at multiple mediums to reach the younger audiences?

  10. Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:46 PM #

PCAs are very much becoming the Mtv award shows and TCA and the Kids Choice Awards. Its a competition between the fan groups to see how many times they can vote to get their celebrity to win. The celebrities it seems its all pr.

GG, Oscars, Screen Actors Guild, these type of shows are suppose to be an award bestowed on the celebrities peers. But it has become a popularity contest amongst the different industries. There have been many times that I have thought why did that particular person, movie, show win that award. Its just puzzling.

Personally, I think most of these shows are fixed. It would explain why some people win a lot and others that have worked really hard are passed up. They haven’t done their dues as some people think.

I also like watching to see what people will wear. See I find I don’t like the musical numbers or whatever just want to see the awards passed out and the speeches.

    • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:56 PM #

      Hi Kim!!!

A lot of people downgrade the PCA, MTV and TCA.

Do u find the award shows that are voted on by critics and industry peers more respectable then the PCA, MTV, TCA?

      • Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:59 PM #

Yes. very much so. Of course I never agree to the critics, I usually love what they hate (example Remember Me) and hate what they love.

I have to say this the GG and Oscars make me notice movies that I would have actually never went to see either a t.v. movie or an actual movie. So then I will rent it when it comes in.

  11. Open Book January 7, 2011 at 7:49 PM #

Well it’s obvious the award shows are trying to get a younger audience to tune in by promoting Robsten. The Oscars did it last year with K and TL do u think that was a success or failure? Do u think they wanted to see R?

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 7:53 PM #

Younger audience? Well I think they have created enough awards shows that ‘target’ specific audiences. I don’t think the idea of ‘all award shows’ for all demographics is a worthy effort.

    • Kim January 7, 2011 at 7:54 PM #

Yes. Everyone wants to see R. Let’s me completely honest here. He is the main star of the franchise. KS and Taylor are just the side kicks. I know that sounds awful, but R has the personality and the looks. His response never seem to be rehearsed or planned. I like that kind of off the cuff.

Nothing against Taylor he just seems like he is to polished and phony.

KS don’t even get me started. She needs to start writing down her acceptance speeches so she doesn’t look like a fool up there.

      • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:57 PM #

LOL! I actually thought she did pretty well. She didn’t stutter to much.

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 7:58 PM #

Who doesn’t want to see R? Although I think to much of a good thing could hurt him. He shouldn’t become to oversaturated.

      • Kim January 7, 2011 at 8:01 PM #

Oh I agree I wouldn’t want him to over saturated himself in the media, which I have heard him say that he worries about. That’s why with him go to GG, I think he should have skipped the PCAs

      • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:02 PM #

KS/TL didn’t factor into my decision to watch the Oscars last year. I actually did have a mission – I wanted to see the tuxedos on the men, with prom coming up for younger member in my household. I wanted to see what they were wearing.

  12. Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:00 PM #

May I just say something about clothing choices. It should be mandatory not to show up looking like a hooker.

    • Kim January 7, 2011 at 8:01 PM #

Well, that’s some of these young celebrities whole wardrobe when they go to these events.

      • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:05 PM #

I know that’s so sad. There’s no decency in clothing choices anymore.

really? Who tells her its a good idea to visit the butcher before an awards ceremony? I wonder how many flies she attracted. I wonder if she had to put a towel where she sat so she wouldn’t stain the seat.

Do u think actors should make statements with their clothes on award shows?

Do u think it’s more acceptable for musicians to make statements with their clothes like Lady Gaga?

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:18 PM #

I’m suprised there is no one up in arms about Gaga’s outfit. Meaning more animal right groups.

Did u see my response up above? The meat dress was not real.

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:22 PM #

Are you sure? Can you confirm that with some sources.
Because I am still horrified by that.

          • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 8:26 PM #

It was not real because stage lights are really hot!!! The dress would have been green and cooked. Also, it’s amazing what u can do with latex these days.

            • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:28 PM #

Eww green and cooked. She changed really fast. I figured she had a refrigerated truck somewhere out back. Because she came in with a different outfit.

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:27 PM #

          I saw it.

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:19 PM #

I don’t get what the ‘statement’ is anyway. It’s an awards show. What statement. I thing Lady Gaga goes after shock value.

      • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 8:33 PM #

Well I think actors should let there work make statements for them not their clothes. Their clothes should not work against them on award shows it’s just a bad idea and why create bad press for yourself. Also, only unknown actors who need to stand out wear some over the top costume to get notice.

Musicians-I think it is expected they wear something over the top because they are creating or trying to maintain an image or theme of there music etc… So it is understandable.

You know it doesn’t matter to me one way or another. As long as they aren’t obscene.

Oh and can someone teach all of these young female celebrities to please stand correctly in a dress. It drives me nuts.

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:23 PM #

Oh please you want to get started on – teaching them how to walk in heels and a dress?

      • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:30 PM #

Learn how to give an interview.

        • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:31 PM #

Or come with one written down? Yeah that’s the ticket! Hey even Lisa Edelstein had it hidden in her dress. It can be done!

          • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:33 PM #

That’s because she older and wiser. Did you see where she poked fun at Krisbians?

            • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:33 PM #

Yes she was great. And btw, I loved her dress.

          • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 8:35 PM #

I so agree with u. Write it down even if it takes u forever to read it.

            • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:37 PM #

              I agree

            • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:44 PM #

Even if a celeb is nominated they all should have a speech. I hate it when celebs say “I didn’t expect to win, so i didn’t write one.” If you’re nominated write one. It should be mandatory.

              • Kim January 7, 2011 at 8:48 PM #

They do that so they look humble. Not expecting to win. Excuse me but someone of these shows they know in advance like the PCAs so just have a speech ready.

                Other shows I agree.

    • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:24 PM #

      LOL

  16. Kim January 7, 2011 at 8:31 PM #

Now I have to say Rob has been getting a lot of flack from some about his wardrobe choice for the PCAs. I thought it looked fine, maybe a little casual compared to the other men, but it is not the Oscars.

Men do have it so much easier for choices in wardrobe.

    • Open Book January 7, 2011 at 8:41 PM #

Well the colors he wore were really good. Neutral color palette good!!! It made him look good on camera. However, the jacket multiple textures made too much of a statement which was not good. I did think the casual attire was perfect for the PCA’s. They are not the GG or Oscars.

      • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:44 PM #

I liked the colors – I agree. But the jacket was wrong style and too complex I agree. Even a really nice suede jacket would have been nice.

        • Kim January 7, 2011 at 8:45 PM #

Yeah I have to say when I first saw him that is what I thought that was. I nice suede.

        • Parisienne January 7, 2011 at 8:48 PM #

suede would have been nice on him.

    • Lurker January 7, 2011 at 8:41 PM #

Well Men have it easier yes, but they aren’t as overtly hanging it all out like some women. But they aren’t immune to the critics either.

    Well I have to go!!!

Nice discussion, I had a lot of fun!!!
