This week LIH will be looking at Shirley MacLaine’s Life Achievement Award. Next we’ll move onto the sad news of the Emmy Award Winner Kathryn Joosten. Then we’ll see what Arnold Schwarzenegger is up to. Finally, we get to view the first trailers for The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Django Unchained.

New Movie Hot Seat:WFE

Welcome to New Movie Hot Seat where each Saturday we will review new films that’s opened in theaters this week.  We will have a live debate discussing the pros and cons of one of the newly released films, then vote if it’s worth the money. Also, each week we will put up a poll for consumers to vote on, which film we will put in the hot seat and debate next.

A Picture of the Business of Circuses

In the novel Water for Elephants, we learn about the story of the Benzini Brothers Circus during the 1930’s depression in the U.S. In the story we learn that the circus’s ultimate demise is due to the financial collapse in 1931. During the story, we learn that the purchase of Rosie the elephant severely drained their cash reserves when they paid $2,000 for her with her own boxcar. Ultimately Benzini collapsed from cash flow problems due to lack of ticket sales and high expenses. Which had us wondering how much money did it take to have a traveling circus back then? How does that compare to today’s circuses like Cirque de Soliel and Ringling Bros? Considering all these companies are private, exact revenue numbers are not available. So we’ll do some extrapolation and hope to paint a picture of the business of circuses. Continue reading

As we prepare for the live red carpet event for Water for Elephants on Sunday, April 17th @ 5pE. We’d like to have a little fun. So here’s a trivia game to see how much you know about Sara Gruen’s novel, the 1930’s and the making of the film Water for Elephants.  We have put together 10 questions for you to answer. Also, over the last six weeks we have featured a (series of articles referenced in red) highlighting Water for Elephants that might be of assistance.  We would love to see how much you know, so give it a try!
